To the editor,
As a Latina woman and member of Generation Z (aka “Gen Z”), I feel it is important to support candidates for elected office who will listen to younger voters and understand that we are the future.
The main reason I ran for the Stamford Democratic City Committee (DCC) this past spring was to represent and be a voice for the younger people in our city. Fortunately, I was successful in my election and ended up becoming the youngest member of the Stamford DCC.
When the DCC held their endorsements in May, I wanted to endorse a candidate who has proven they understand and will advocate for the issues that matter to younger residents. That is why I proudly endorsed Jonathan Jacobson for the 148th State House District.
Jonathan was elected to the Stamford Board of Representatives at only 28 years old. As one of the youngest members of the board, Jonathan had to navigate the dynamics of local politics, but he learned quickly, as is evident through his continual advocacy for issues that matter to young professionals and families.
It’s also not every day that you have a candidate who will provide an opportunity for young adults to work on their campaign, but for the past three months, Jonathan has done just that. He helped open the door to new opportunities and mentor young and politically active residents, many of whom are involved in campaigning for the first time yet are the backbone of his campaign.
Most voters, especially younger voters, are tired of elected officials holding onto power and not providing the opportunity and pathway for other people to get involved in public service and bring new ideas and perspectives to the table. Our current state representative for the 148th district embodies this, as she holds three elected seats — as a member of the Stamford DCC, a member of the Stamford Board of Representatives, and as a state representative. By holding three seats, she is preventing other individuals from serving and prohibiting younger and diverse voices to take part in our democratic process.
Jonathan Jacobson has been clear — if elected as state representative, he will vacate his seat on the Board of Representatives, providing the opportunity for someone new to serve our community.
Young voters — local elections matter! Let your voice be heard and if you live in the 148th House District, make sure to vote on Tuesday, Aug. 13, for Jonathan Jacobson, a candidate who will listen and advocate for a better future for us and our wonderful city.
