In the wake of the Supreme Court’s dismantling of Roe v. Wade in thesummer of 2022, the landscape of abortion access in the United States shifted drastically. What was once a constitutionally protected right is now subject to a complex and often hostile patchwork of state laws. Across the country, women and people who can become pregnant face a daunting maze of restrictions that threaten their health and autonomy.
The impact has been severe. In states with “trigger laws,” which were designed to snap into place immediately upon Roe’s collapse, abortion bans and restrictions have created dangerous scenarios. Access to essential procedures, like dilation and curettage (D&C), a critical component of both abortion and miscarriage care, has been severely curtailed or outright banned in many areas. This has led to increased risks ofsepsisandhemorrhagefor those who suffer miscarriages, alongside mountingbarriersto accessing medication abortifacients.
Here in Connecticut, we may seem insulated from this crisis. Abortion services remain largely accessible, but this is not a mere accident of geography. It is the result of Democratic voter participation and deliberate legislative choices made by elected officials who support reproductive rights. The future of abortion access in our state depends on voters like you and our continued vigilance at the polls.
For residents of Stamford’s 148th District covering Cove, East Side, and parts of Glenbrook, the upcoming primary on Aug. 13 is crucial. Voters will decide between Jonathan Jacobson, an 8-year veteran of the Board of Representatives and the Stamford Democratic City Committee’s endorsed candidate, and Anabel Figueroa, who claims to be a Democrat but has a troubling record on reproductive rights.
Figueroa’s stance on abortionhas been inconsistent at best. Despite her recent claims of being “pro-choice,” her voting history paints a very different picture. She participated in an anti-abortion rally and voted against crucial measures such as the CT Safe Harbor bill, which protects individuals from states with restrictive abortion laws seeking care in Connecticut. This record suggests that Figueroa’s support for abortion access is more rhetorical than real.
In contrast, Jacobson has demonstrated a steadfast commitment to protecting reproductive rights. Endorsed byPlanned Parenthood Votes! Connecticut, Jacobson supports comprehensive reproductive healthcare, including contraception and abortion. He understands that protecting reproductive rights is fundamental not just for women’s health, but for gender equality and social justice. His record reflects a clear commitment to safeguarding access to these essential services, ensuring that Connecticut remains a bastion of reproductive freedom.
The stakes are higher than ever. With the potential for a conservative resurgence in Washington, D.C., and the possibility of anational abortion ban, it is imperative that Connecticut fortify its defenses against these threats. The state legislature will play a critical role in this effort, and the outcome of local elections will directly impact our ability to maintain and expand access to reproductive healthcare.
This primary election is not just about choosing a representative; it is about determining whether Stamford will stand firm in its support of reproductive rights or risk falling back into a precarious situation where access to care is compromised. We cannot afford to elect officials who do not fully support unrestricted access to healthcare services.
As a staunch advocate for reproductive rights and gender equality, I urge all Democrats in the 148th District to vote for Jonathan Jacobson. Primary Day is Tuesday, Aug. 13, with polls open from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Voting locations have changed recently, so check your designated polling place here.
This election is pivotal. We need state legislators who will fight to ensure that every person, regardless of their race, religion, or socioeconomic status, has full access to healthcare services in Connecticut. Jonathan Jacobson’s proven dedication to advancing women’s rights and health care access makes him the clear choice. Let’s ensure that we protect the progress we’ve made and continue to fight for a future where reproductive rights are preserved for all.
Our collective vote will steer Connecticut’s future. Let’s make sure we choose a path that affirms our commitment to justice, equality, and comprehensive healthcare. Vote for Jonathan Jacobson because our rights, our health, and our future depend on it.
